The M1911 is a robust and reliable semi-automatic pistol with a simple-action mechanism, powered by a .45 ACP cartridge. It was designed by John M. Browning for military use. The pistol was officially adopted as a weapon by the U.S. Armed Forces on March 29, 1911, and was designated as the .45, M1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol. Later, from 1924, the designation was changed to Pistol Auto Caliber .45, M1911A1.
During its service life, the army acquired approximately 2.7 million pistols. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It remained in service in the American army until 1985, when it was replaced by the Beretta pistol. Some variants are still in production and are still actively used in some units of the Special Forces, Navy forces, and Marine Corps.
