The M1911 is a robust and reliable, single-action semi-automatic pistol operated with direct recoil and powered by a 7-caliber .45 cartridge stacker. It was designed for military use by John M. Browning, who also designed the appropriate cartridge for the weapon, the .45 ACP. On March 29, 1911, it was officially accepted as statutory weapon by the United States Armed Forces, and was originally designated .45, M1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol. Subsequently, from 1924, its designation was changed to Pistol Auto Caliber .45, M1911A1. In total, the army acquired approximately 2.7 million pistols.
It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It remained in continuous service in the US Army until 1985, when it was replaced by the Beretta pistol. Some variants are still in production, and given their popularity, they are still active in some units of Special Forces, Navy Forces, and Marine Corps.
