The Model 1892 was a repeating rifle with lever action, allowing multiple shots before reloading. The used cartridge was ejected and replaced with a new one by the lever's action at the trigger guard, hence the term "repeating rifle." Its operation involves a horizontal movement closure with a needle inside. When the lower lever is activated, the closure unlocks and moves backward, exposing the breech, allowing space for a lifting tile and cocking the hammer. At the end of its backward movement, the closure moves a bullet from the magazine to the lifting tile. The lever's forward movement raises the tile, placing the bullet in front of the breech, where it is pushed in by closing. The final upward movement of the lever locks the lock back into the firing position.

The design of this model marked a return to its origins by using shorter revolver cartridges that generated less pressure. It also incorporated a Browning action, which was much more resistant than the first rifles derived from the Henry. Over 1,000,000 units were manufactured.
