Historical Significance of the Sheriff

The word ”Sheriff” comes from medieval England and denoted the person responsible for administering justice in a county. In several Anglo-Saxon countries such as Great Britain, the United States, and Canada, the sheriff remains the public police and justice authority.

The first English settlers brought the sheriff to the American continent to maintain order in the new communities. During the gold rush, their presence became increasingly important, and to distinguish those who gave the law, a badge was placed on the chest as a recognizable symbol of rank and authority.

Evolution of the Badge Over Time

Originally, many badges were oval or shield-shaped, but later they began to be represented with a 5-point star, a symbol associated with the flag of the United States. Since then, the sheriff’s badge has evolved into a 5, 6, or 7-pointed star.

Today, most sheriffs use a star-shaped badge, while police officers often use a shield or oval-shaped badge. Federal agencies often use plaques with an eagle on the shield.
