Function and Use of Flintlock Pistols
Flintlock pistols used a flint that, when the hammer was triggered, produced a spark that ignited the gunpowder. Each shot required manual reloading of the ammunition. The ammunition, which was introduced through the mouth of the barrel, consisted of gunpowder, a projectile, and a paper wad that kept the previous two compressed inside the barrel.
- Manual reloading required after each shot.
- Ammunition consisting of gunpowder, projectile, and paper wad.
These pistols were used as self-defense weapons until the mid-19th century. Their effective range was short, and they were often used as a complement to a sword or knife. Use in Combat
In combat, these weapons were usually used for a single shot because reloading was slow. After firing, soldiers were forced to draw their sabers or swords, or use the pistol as a bludgeon, since circumstances rarely allowed time for reloading.
